Luminosity Profiles of Merger Remnants

چکیده

Using published luminosity and molecular gas profiles of the late-stage mergers NGC 3921, NGC 7252 and Arp 220, we examine the expected luminosity profiles of the evolved merger remnants, especially in light of the massive CO complexes that are observed in their nuclei. For NGC 3921 and NGC 7252 we predict that the resulting luminosity profiles will be characterized by an r law. In view of previous optical work on these systems, it seems likely that they will evolve into normal ellipticals as regards their optical properties. Due to a much higher central molecular column density, Arp 220 might not evolve such a “seamless” light profile. We conclude that ultraluminous infrared mergers such as Arp 220 either evolve into ellipticals with anomalous luminosity profiles, or do not produce many low-mass stars out of their molecular gas complexes. Nuclear Brightness Profiles of Merger Remnants: Constraints on the Formation of Ellipticals by Mergers

We present preliminary results of an HST/NICMOS program to image merger remnants in the J, H and K bands. The nuclear brightness profiles for most sample galaxies are similar to those typical for elliptical galaxies, but some (including the well-studied NGC 3921 and 7252) have an unusually high luminosity density at small radii. This is consistent with the prediction of N-body simulations that ...

The Fate of Merger Remnants

Using published luminosity and molecular gas profiles of the merger remnants NGC 3921, NGC 7252 and Arp 220, we examine the expected morphological and kinematic structure of the resulting merger remnants, especially in light of the massive CO complexes that are observed in their nuclei. For NGC 3921 and NGC 7252 we find that even under the most optimistic estimates (normal IMF, no mass ejection...

A growing body of observational evidence suggests that the luminosity, pho-tometric shape and amount of rotational or anisotropical support in elliptical galaxies may provide vital clues to how they formed. Elliptical galaxies appear to fall into two distinct categories based on these parameters: bright, boxy shaped, with little or no rotation, and less luminous, disky shaped with significant r...

X-ray Emission from Hot Gas in Galaxy Mergers

We examine X-ray emission produced from hot gas during collisions and mergers of disk galaxies. To study this process, we employ simulations that incorporate cosmologically motivated disk-galaxy models and include the effects of radiative cooling, star formation, supernova feedback, and accreting supermassive black holes. We find that during a merger, the colliding gas in the disks is shock-hea...
